Notice To Patients About Scheduling:

Dr. Gholam Ali Miamee DDS is not accepting exam appointments, checkups or cleanings. Dr. Gholam Ali Miamee DDS accepts only surgical procedures that require special attention due to some complications.

If the patient has a problem that may require Dr. Gholam Ali Miamee DDS then they must first have examination with our associate dentists. After the associate dentist treatment plans a surgical procedure that requires special attention, the patient will then be offered an appointment with Dr. Gholam Ali Miamee DDS for consult and/or treatment. Bad news is he can't do your checkup/cleaning anymore. Good news is he will be standing by if someone in your family needs a tough extraction or root canal one day.

Dr. Gholam Ali Miamee DDS (and all the dentists in our dental office) are only general dentists. You should always get second opinion or expert level care from specialist dentists such as endodontist, oral surgeon, periodontist, prosthodontist, orthodontist and/or pedodontist to get the highest level of care. Specialist dentists are far superior to general dentist in every way. They have amazing training that is much more advanced than a general dentist. Furthermore, they have experience that is light years ahead of any general dentist's experience with these complicated procedures. Thus, even though Dr. Gholam Ali Miamee DDS and other general dentists perform extractions, root canals and implants we can never hope to have the same level of expertise as a formally trained specialist dentist. Thus, we recommend Dr. Charles Fields Periodontist, Dr. Pedram Yahgmaie Oral Surgeon, Brian A. Mahler, DDS, Prosthodontist, Dr. Lan Tran Orthodontist, Dr. Alan Wonhee Lee, DDS, MS endodontist, etc.

Tips for Choosing the Right Toothbrush in Reston, VA for Your Dental Needs

Choosing the right toothbrush is key for keeping your teeth and gums healthy. With so many options available in Reston, VA, it can be tricky to know which one is best for you. Here's what you need to know to pick the perfect toothbrush for your needs.

Manual vs. Electric Toothbrushes

The first choice is between manual and electric toothbrushes. Both can clean teeth well when used properly.

Manual toothbrushes:

  • More affordable
  • No need for charging or batteries
  • Good for travel
  • Allow more control over brushing pressure

Electric toothbrushes:

  • Can be easier for people with limited hand mobility
  • Often have timers to ensure proper brushing duration
  • Some models have pressure sensors to prevent overbrushing
  • May be more fun for kids, encouraging better brushing habits

Bristle Softness

Dentists usually recommend soft-bristled toothbrushes. They clean effectively while being gentle on teeth and gums. Medium and hard bristles can damage enamel and gums if used with too much pressure.

Toothbrush Head Size

The size of the toothbrush head matters. It should fit comfortably in your mouth and reach all your teeth.

  • For adults: Look for a head that's about 1 inch long and 1/2 inch wide
  • For children: Choose smaller heads suited for their mouth size

Handle Comfort

A comfortable handle helps you brush better. Consider these factors:

  • Grip: Non-slip grips can help, especially if you brush with wet hands
  • Shape: Some handles are straight, others are angled for better reach
  • Flexibility: A slightly flexible neck can help reduce pressure on teeth and gums

Special Features to Consider

Some toothbrushes come with extra features that might be helpful:

  • Tongue cleaners on the back of the brush head
  • Colored bristles that fade to indicate when it's time to replace the brush
  • Travel cases for keeping your toothbrush clean on the go

When to Replace Your Toothbrush

No matter which toothbrush you choose, it's important to replace it regularly:

  • Replace manual toothbrushes every 3-4 months
  • For electric toothbrushes, replace the head every 3-4 months
  • Replace sooner if the bristles become frayed or splayed

Considerations for Specific Dental Needs

Your dental health might require a specific type of toothbrush:

  • Sensitive teeth: Extra-soft bristles or special desensitizing toothbrushes
  • Braces: Orthodontic brushes with V-shaped bristle patterns
  • Gum disease: Soft bristles and possibly an electric toothbrush for gentle, thorough cleaning
