Notice To Patients About Scheduling:

Dr. Gholam Ali Miamee DDS is not accepting exam appointments, checkups or cleanings.

Dr. Gholam Ali Miamee DDS accepts only surgical procedures that require special attention typically root canals, extractions or implants.

If the patient has a problem that requires Dr. Gholam Ali Miamee DDS then they typically have examination with our associate dentists with xrays, diagnosis and sometimes a preliminary cleaning.

After the associate dentists treatment plan surgical procedures then the patient will be offered an appointment with Dr. Gholam Ali Miamee DDS for consult and/or treatment.

Dr. Gholam Ali Miamee will be standing by if someone in your family needs a tough extraction or root canal one day.

Dr. Gholam Ali Miamee DDS (and all the dentists in our dental office) are only general dentists. You should always get second opinion or expert level care from specialist dentists such as endodontist, oral surgeon, periodontist, prosthodontist, orthodontist and/or pedodontist to get the highest level of care. Specialist dentists are far superior to general dentists in every way. They have amazing training that is much more advanced than a general dentist. Furthermore, they have experience that is light years ahead of any general dentist's experience with these complicated procedures. Thus, even though Dr. Gholam Ali Miamee DDS and other general dentists perform extractions, root canals and implants we can never hope to have the same level of expertise as a formally trained specialist dentist. Thus, we recommend Dr. Charles Fields Periodontist, Dr. Pedram Yahgmaie Oral Surgeon, Brian A. Mahler, DDS, Prosthodontist, Dr. Lan Tran Orthodontist, Dr. Alan Wonhee Lee, DDS, MS endodontist, etc.

Preparing Your Child in Reston, VA for Their First Dental Filling

A child's first dental filling can be a new experience for both parents and kids. Proper preparation can help make the process smoother and less stressful. Here's how you can prepare your child in Reston, VA for their first dental filling, ensuring a positive experience at the dentist's office.

Understanding the Need for a Filling

Before the appointment, explain to your child why they need a filling:

  • Cavities are tiny holes in teeth caused by bacteria
  • Fillings help protect teeth from further damage
  • The procedure will help keep their teeth healthy and strong

What to Expect During the Procedure

Walk your child through the steps of getting a filling:

  1. The dentist will numb the area around the tooth
  2. They'll remove the decayed part of the tooth
  3. The dentist will fill the cleaned area with special material
  4. The filling will be shaped and polished

Addressing Common Concerns

Children often have worries about dental procedures. Address these common concerns:

  • Pain: Reassure them that the area will be numb, so they won't feel pain
  • Sounds: Explain that they might hear buzzing or drilling sounds, but these are normal
  • Time: Let them know it usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour

Preparing for the Appointment

Before the visit:

  • Choose a time when your child is usually well-rested
  • Avoid using words like "hurt" or "pain" when discussing the procedure
  • Read children's books about dental visits together
  • Practice opening wide and counting teeth at home

During the Appointment

Help your child stay calm during the procedure:

  • Bring a comfort item (favorite toy or blanket)
  • Use distraction techniques (counting, storytelling)
  • Offer praise and encouragement throughout the visit

After the Filling

Post-procedure care is important:

  • Follow the dentist's instructions for eating and drinking
  • Watch for any signs of discomfort or allergic reactions
  • Reinforce good oral hygiene habits to prevent future cavities

Preventing Future Cavities

Use this experience to emphasize cavity prevention:

  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss once a day
  • Limit sugary snacks and drinks
  • Schedule regular dental check-ups

The Role of Positive Reinforcement

Praise your child for their bravery and cooperation. Consider:

  • A small, non-food reward after the appointment
  • Extra playtime or a special activity
  • Sharing their success with family members
